Intellectual Disability Assessments

Intellectual disability involves significant difficulties in intellectual functioning, which can affect learning, problem-solving, communication, and independent daily living skills. These difficulties are typically present from childhood or adolescence and may impact academic progress, social functioning, and long-term independence. A comprehensive neuropsychological assessment helps to clarify cognitive functioning, and the level of support required.

Who May Benefit?

An assessment may be helpful for children or adolescents who present with:

  • Global learning difficulties across academic areas
  • Delayed developmental milestones
  • Difficulties with reasoning, problem-solving, and abstract thinking
  • Challenges with communication and comprehension
  • Poor academic progress despite support and intervention
  • Difficulties managing age-appropriate independence
  • Concerns raised by teachers, caregivers, or healthcare professionals
  • Suspected intellectual developmental disorder

Following the Assessment

Feedback is provided clearly and sensitively and includes:

  • An explanation of cognitive functioning profile
  • Clarification of level of support required (if applicable)
  • Recommendations for educational placement and support strategies
  • Guidance for caregivers and schools on practical assistance
  • Referrals to additional services where appropriate

If there are concerns about a child or adolescent’s learning, development, or independence skills, please contact us to discuss whether a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment would be appropriate.
