Capacity Assessments

Capacity assessments evaluate an individual’s ability to make informed, independent decisions and to manage key areas of daily functioning. These assessments are often required following neurological illness, brain injury, cognitive decline, or psychiatric conditions.

Who May Benefit?

An assessment may be helpful in situations where there are concerns regarding a person’s ability to:

  • Manage finances, banking, or complex monetary decisions
  • Understand and make informed decisions about work or employment
  • Maintain safe and independent daily functioning
  • Make decisions regarding medical treatment or care
  • Return to or remain in the workplace after illness or injury
  • Sustain consistent cognitive functioning in high-demand environments
  • Function independently following cognitive decline or neurological change

Important Considerations

Capacity is task-specific and may vary depending on the complexity of the decision being made. A person may have capacity in some areas of functioning but not others. A neuropsychological assessment provides a structured and objective evaluation to support fair and appropriate conclusions.

Following the Assessment

Feedback is provided in a clear and practical manner, including:

  • An explanation of cognitive and functional strengths and limitations
  • Clarification of decision-making capacity in specific domains
  • Recommendations regarding support, supervision, or accommodations
  • Guidance for employers or families where relevant
  • Suggestions for rehabilitation or further intervention if needed

If there are concerns regarding an individual’s ability to make informed decisions or manage daily responsibilities, a capacity assessment can provide valuable clarity and support appropriate planning. Please contact the practice to discuss your needs.
